Find What You're Looking For
by Robyn Harton
Using a search engine or directory can be like sifting through
a mountain of sand to find a pea. You know what you want to
find, but figuring out how to find it is the trick. These
simple tips will help you find what you're looking for.
1) "" (example: "notebook paper") -
If you only remember one of these tips, remember
this one!
Quotation marks around a search phrase means that the exact
phrase must be found in the search results. This means the
search will find results that have the exact phrase in the
results.
2) + (example: notebook +paper)
A + (plus sign) in front of a word in a search box means
that the word must be found in the search
results. This means that searches will find results that
have both the words notebook and paper in them.
3) - (example: notebook -paper)
A - (minus sign) in front of a word in a search box means
that the word must not be found in the search results. This
means that this search will find results that have notebook
but do not have the word paper.
These are common modifiers that work on most search engines,
but may not work on all. If it doesn't work on the search
engine you prefer, look for an "Advanced Search"
or "Search Tips" link and see what they do use.
