Chanting Drawing Mandalas
"Chanting Paintings" are what I called the circular artworks that I do to pray/ask for help/meditate/send energy for a specific purpose. I didn't think of them as mandalas or call them mandalas when I first started doing them. I just did them because they felt right to do. Only later did I realize that they were mandalas done with the ritual and intent of prayer or sending energy.
I clearly remember doing one when my 82 year old grandmother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It was done on newsprint with markers, but the energy that went into designing the symbols and "chanting" the drawing made it come to life. My prayer in that painting was that she would have the strength to deal with the cancer and to do the things she still needed to do in life, with as little pain as possible. I can't say that the chanting drawing made any difference. However, my grandmother was able to have chemotherapy repeatedly, take care of her bedridden, dying sister, and arrange for the other things she needed to... all without pain killers other than plain old acetaminophen, until a week before her death in 1995. Her doctors called her "miraculous" for her ability to deal with the chemotherapy and survive the 3 years she did after the metastasized cancer was discovered. Whether the chanting drawing helped or not, it made me feel better to do it, and concentrated my wishes for her in my heart.
During
a particularly difficult time for me, I felt a need to bring love and
healing into my life. This
is a chanting drawing I did at that time. It's been damaged a bit
over time, but it still hangs on my wall. Every time I see it, I'm reminded
of my desire to bring love and healing to myself and to others, into life
in general.
