Making a Mandala

People have asked me over and over how to make mandalas. There must be as many techniques as there are stars in the sky. However, I'll share one way of making a simple digital mandala. This is just an tutorial and starting point for mandala ideas. You can take it far beyond this. Note: This exercise assumes that you know your graphics program moderately well.

Start out with either
Paint Shop Pro 7 OR PhotoShop (or a PS compatible program) plus KPT 3.

Create a new file with the dimensions 250 pixels by 250 pixels, 72 dpi with a white background.

Open a picture file of anything that interests you, and paste it onto your image. For this exercise, I've chosen a small collage of brightly colored stones. The more colorful the image, the brighter the mandala will be. Figure 1

Expand (or shrink) the picture on the new layer to fill most of the image. I normally make the colorful picture the full size of the image. This gives me the most color to work with, and it can be cropped later.
