What is a mandala?

Mandalas are sacred circles.
A mandala can be a reflection of emotion,
a prayer,
a celebration,
a reminder,
or simply a bit of beauty.

The word mandala means circle or wheel in Sanskrit. Mandalas have been used for centuries by various cultures as sacred and meditational art forms. Catholic rose windows, such at that in the Cathedral of Notre Dame are a form of mandala, created to shine light into a church or cathedral to instill in the viewer the beauty and love of God. Buddhists have created two dimensional and three dimensional mandalas for centuries as a way of depicing the gods and the universe. Hindus have used them also for centuries as sacred meditational tools.

Today mandalas are used in various cultures as they have been historically as well as other ways. Tibetan monks still create lovely three dimensional mandalas in the form of sand paintings, where the creation of the mandala is a ritual more sacred than the mandala itself. And of course, rose windows are still created for Catholic churches or tiny versions for homes. Pagan worshippers sometimes use them to draw a "spell" of something they wish to happen. Mandalas are also used to evoke prayer, as a memorial, for meditation, or to reflect emotion. Sometimes they are even just used as lovely artworks to make people smile.
