About Silver Egypt Silver was used rarely in Ancient Egyptian artwork for a reason... one of the same reasons today many people wear sterling jewelry instead of gold... it was too expensive! While gold was mined in and near Egypt, any silver used had to be imported over great distances and smelted from ore, which made it prohibitively costly. This, in combination with the fact that gold was also associated with Ra, the sun god, made use of silver less widespread. In Richard Deurer's excellent site about ancient and modern Egypt, The Egyptian Galleries (http://members.aol.com/egyptart visited 01/15/99), he states "Silver was rare in ancient Egypt, more precious than gold. This silver coffin, inlaid with gold, represents a vast amount of wealth during a time at which the empire was in decline," referring to the silver coffin of Psuesennes I of the 21st Dynasty. In Nina Designs' (http://www.nets.com/nina/bali/ancienttechniques.html visited 01/15/99) information on the ancient techniques used by their own silversmiths today, it states, "In Egypt, silver was originally rarer than gold and more valuable."
