Color Sets the Mood
by Robyn Harton
Color sets the mood for everything we lay eyes on.
Color gives emotions and subconscious symbols. In
planning and creating graphics and websites, we can
use
these emotions and symbols to encourage certain
attitudes and reactions.
Here is a list of some of the symbols and emotions
that
color gives.
Black: night, mystery, space, authority
Blue: sky, water, travel, freedom, truth
Brown: comfort, strength, tradition
Green: money, prosperity, growth, calm, envy, greed
Orange: autumn, youthfulness, fire, active
Pink: romantic, affection, gentleness
Purple: royalty, dignity, spirituality, mysticism
Red: love, energetic, excitement, warmth, sensuality
White: purity, peace, perfection
Yellow: light, purity, understanding
Knowledge of these can help choose colors for websites
and graphics. If your website is for selling perfumes,
you might choose pink and yellow to give a sense of
romance, gentleness and purity. The same colors would
not work well though for a website about exploring
outer
space. Blues and blacks would give a better sense
of
space and travel.
Using your personal favorite color for your website
or
company graphics might be fun, but choosing colors
that
give the right mood and symbols for the viewer will
likely be more successful.
